Whether a colonist goes Earthsick depends on Morale. Once each sol, every non-immune colonist below Morale 50 has a chance to turn Earthsick, higher the lower the Morale.
Once each sol, every non-immune colonist below Morale 50 is checked. The chance that sol is 100 - 2 × Morale percent. At Morale 50 or above the chance is zero.
| Morale | Chance that sol |
|---|---|
| 50 or more | 0% |
| 40 | 20% |
| 30 | 40% |
| 25 | 50% |
| 20 | 60% |
| 10 | 80% |
| 0 | 100% |
The check runs once per sol, so a colonist who sits at low Morale gets one roll per sol: a colonist at Morale 10 has an 80% chance each sol, not a certainty.
An Earthsick colonist recovers once Morale climbs back to 70. A colonist can be below Morale 50 (a chance to turn Earthsick) yet not have recovered to Morale 70 (still Earthsick if already), the same recover-higher-than-you-fell gap the base game has with Comfort.
Comfort no longer triggers Earthsick on its own. It matters through Morale: Comfort is one of the three stats that feed Morale, so tanked Comfort pulls Morale down and raises the Earthsick chance that way.
An Earthsick colonist loses the job, cannot work, and boards the next departing rocket to Earth. Each fresh Earthsick colonist also removes up to two random applicants from the recruitment pool with no replacement (see Applicant generation).
Martianborn, Refugees, colonists under the International Mars Mission sponsor, and colonists under the Iron Colonists rule never go Earthsick.
